A tremendous read - and the first time, I'm sure, that I have seen the Rolling Stones and Delacroix, two of my great heroes, mentioned in the same sentence. All a far cry from my first Gap Year experience of Tangier, when I arrived - pleasantly stoned - with just £15 in my pocket. With a fellow "would-be" hippie, we then moved on to Fez, where we spent a week ingesting the heady atmosphere of an extraordinary place. Luckily I had just enough money left to pay for our little garret, which was a relief as the seedy landlord said he'd waive the rent if I'd sleep with him.

Now that really is a great Morocco story, Bertie!

I've never been to Tangier, but the redolence of your writing takes me straight back to the souks of Fez & Marrakesh where similar sumptuous tableaux abound. And the lemon chicken sounds delicious. We'll be giving that a whirl, for sure!

Not being that well-travelled, I enjoy your writing as it tells me all I need to know about each city or island or country you visit. I can marvel at the aromas and flavours of the cuisine, the colours in the streets, languages spoken, and the history in just the right sobering detail.

I have wanted to try a dish with preserved lemons- I shall definitely try this one!

You bring it alive. The multi colonial and artistic past makes it seem particularly interesting. Some sadness in seeing the economic and class divide, which unfortunately exists most places. Thanks for bringing it all out.

Sounds like a great trip, and the Tagine seem delicious!

I've improvised "North African-Inspired" stews before, but never followed a recipe. Love using cinnamon as a savory ingredient; I'll have to try saffron next time.😋

Oh, I want to go! We spent a week in Malaga in late February of 2020 and had thought we might drive down the coast and hop on the ferry to Tangier, but there was all this news about a rapidly spreading virus...so we didn't make it to Morocco! Thank you for taking us there by words and photos.

Thank you, Michelle! It's the one and only time we've made a brief ferry crossing between two continents- that alone made it an indelible memory.

Delighted to have you on board as a subscriber. About to do the same!

Thank you, David. It was a whirlwind 24 hour Visit, but Tangier and the local people we met made a huge impression on us. Especially love to hear about your experiences in Fez!
