It is a beautiful place with lovely people. Though compared with our first visit on honeymoon [muffled tones] years ago, the south coast from Funchal to the western tip has somewhat sacrificed its beauty to the development that comes with the tourist dollar. The antiquated charm of Churchill's idyll, Câmara de Lobos, has lost its unique identity, although, as that came with a hefty dose of poverty, I am sure the locals won't mind at all.
I am surprised, though, that you don't mention the ubiquitous agapanthus that is so characteristic of the island, nor the equally prevalent 'Prato di dia' - a.k.a. dish of the day, a foodie's must - an unlikely combination of a fearsome-looking pike-like fish with that abundant island crop, bananas!
Gorgeous writing, photos (those adorable flower girls and that doorway art!) and recipe. I’d love to visit, though the steep hills might give me a heart attack!
Appreciate the share @Portia
Too splendid not to share, guys.
So much fun to read!! Felt like I was there.
That’s lovely to hear, Margaret!

We did, but once was enough!
Love fish and bananas (especially Madeiran ones), but not on the same plate, David!
You have to try these things. Maybe only once, but you have to try them!

So happy you enjoyed, Ruth. It’s an extraordinary island!

Ha! Thanks Jeanine!
My pleasure!
Such a beautiful place. Add you aren't wrong about those scary roads!
It really is and they truly are!!
After reading this I cannot avoid a trip to this beautiful place.
Great to hear. You won’t be disappointed, Robert!
Madeira looks like the most beautiful dream come true.
It’s Europe’s Hawai’i, Portia!
