I'd taken a peak at the first half of your Merida/Yuc post yesterday and promptly finished it today, with your prompt ): I love Merida. We went 3x a year from Puerto Morelos (QRoo) to buy Spanish language books for our bookstore-- through a distributor and also at the numerous, at the time, street fairs w/ books. I love how you mention how empty so many of the sites are--we experienced the same thing at Ek Balam, and years ago at Coba. Just love it. Also, dining alone in large restaurants seems to be a thing too. Just kind of odd, and cool. So glad we're all pleasantly enamored w/ a grand city and a phenomenal culture and Peninsula. Saludos y encantada!
My aversion to the very idea of Cancun is so strong that I've never visited the Yucatan at all. But Pati Jinich and yourselves have said such great things about Mérida, I really need to overcome that bias!
However, I have enjoyed Cochinita Pibil at, of all places, Sanborns in Acapulco. It was delicious, and I assume it is even more so when cooked on (and in) it's native soil.
The Mayan Empire is such a great and beautiful area. The imagination runs wild when hearing stories of its great past. We went to one ruin of a sports court surrounded by a stunning stone wall . At what we would call the half-way line the was a vertical stone hoop about 3 metres from the ground. Two teams would play until the winning team got the ball (usually a human head) through the hoop. The winning team were rewarded by being sacrificed.
Such range to your travels, always; and history, culture, people, and a sense of the passage of time.
What a visual feast . Happy Easter to you in advance . Btw Bangalore is 35* C today

Thanks for this piece. I'm hoping to go to Merida next winter. The Hacienda Temozon looks so beautiful!

Lovely description! Whisked me back to my visit to Merida and the Yucatan a few years ago.
Ek Balam is extraordinary, but sadly we never made it to Coba. So glad you enjoyed, Jeanine.
