I had to double-check when this was written as it still sounds so au courant. We visited Barcelona perhaps a year or two before you and fell in love with the city, though we only spent about a week or so. We're stopping there for a few days before heading to Italy in May, and you're making me wish we had more time and could live there for a while. It's one of my favorite cities, probably for all the reasons you like it--so vibrant, full of art, history, incredible food and people, color and life. I can't wait to see what progress has been made on the Sagrada Familia, to revisit the other Gaudi landmarks, and to taste the tortilla de patatas (and try making your version when I get home!). Thanks for your virtual tour. California's still dreaming' on this winter's day. Hope to meet you guys if you make a return visit to this coast one day.
I love reading this story! That moment when we switch from “visiting” to “living”. I love how fast that happens for you two! Are you still wintering in Spain? Wish we would have met before you guys left LA!
If you have to leave LA, and I can only imagine how painful it was for Marco and Sabrina, then Barcelona is a magnificent place to soothe the grieving heart and soul. Thank you, Marco, for a fabulous cultural tour around Spain's most exciting city. Only one omission - no mention of Nou Camp, a go-to destination for most visitors to the city. But then, back in the day, Marco remained remarkably unimpressed by Bootham Crescent, the old home of York City FC, and the shining jewel in the city of York's crown.
My time in Barcelona was limited to a brief layover (less than 24 hours) on my way back from Tenerife. Didn't even have a chance to see La Sagrada Familia, but I did get to enjoy a delicious late night snack of wine-braised sausage, and a great breakfast of pastry and hot tea standing up in a working class cafe. I also explored the elegant streets around Plaza de España, saw the former bullring -- and more than a couple of apartments flying Catalan flags.
In other words, it was enough time to know I'll have to go back -- and to be jealous that you had three whole months!

Wow, I want to wake up in Barcelona! 🙌
I was about to wish you safe travels to London today and that sun is forecast this week. And then I noticed that this wintering is from 10 years ago!
A great commentary on how to enjoy Barcelona. I will follow in some of your foot steps. A joy to read as usual.
Much appreciated, Robert. It remains one of our favourite cities and is never better than in wintertime!
