Wow you've painted such a beautiful picture with this post. I will be adding La Palma to my list of travel destinations and it's going high up on the list. That lobster dish is making my mouth water!
The nature of my substack project means my experiences on Tenerife and Gran Canaria were predominantly urban. But even so, what I did see of the archipelago's wild landscapes was impressive indeed. I'll definitely like to see La Palma if I go back.
Also: that lobster dish looks absolutely gorgeous -- and I don't even eat seafood!
I can still taste that dish as I write this. We've visited both Gran Canaria and Tenerife and both islands have incredible wild places too (as does La Gomera), but La Palma is definitely our favourite.
What an amazing island you describe so well. Such a vivid description. I love the sound of the hotel you found here- that’s my idea of a retreat! Those colours on such a bleak winter’s day here was a welcome distraction . The recipe sounds delicious- Mmmmmmm brothy lobster rice… yum.
So that’s the island Madonna referred to in my youth! It wasn’t her best album, to be fair- you describe it so much better- hehe :-))
Thank you, Lena. We really loved our time there. As for Madonna's 'La Isla bonita', I'd love to think she was singing about La Palma but apparently it's about an island off Belize ;((
A beautiful description of the island and incentive to spend time there. A great place to relax or move around and superb food. Escaping hoards of pasty tattooed beer drinkers and 24 hour English breakfasts is another reason to avoid the big islands.
Even on Tenerife, that scene is mainly limited to the "artificial" resort towns on the south coast. You don't really see much of that crowd in Santa Cruz or La Laguna -- at least I didn't.
The colours in your photos are simply ravishing. Just stunning!
Gorgeous!
Thank you, Lakshmi. These memories could hardly be fresher as we only returned from La Palma two weeks ago!
Great to hear that you made it down to the pool—a delightful conclusion to such an eventful trip and article! That hacienda looks absolutely stunning!

Thank you. You won't regret it, Carolyn!
That sounds amazing.

We'll take the compliment anyway!!
Haha I stand corrected!!! 🙃
Looks like a lovely trip!
Gorgeous photos and a compelling read as always
We'll be back for sure, Anna
It’s an extraordinary place, David! One day we’ll do that hike along the island’s volcanic spine
Thanks so much!
Looking out of the window this morning at a rainy, cold London Town it seems like an impossibly lovely mirage, Jolene
It's not often that we want to return to a place immediately after leaving. La Palma really is that seductive, Lynn!

Absolutely true.
