Fellow Foodies and Travellers,
Sabrina and I are riding the rails in Northern Europe for the next couple of weeks, so we won’t be publishing our next Newsletter until the first week of June.
One of our frustrations when writing these stories is that there are always moments that don’t fit neatly into the narrative, so we’re taking the opportunity of this hiatus post to share a selection of ‘outtakes’ that didn’t make the final edits.
All life’s ‘essentials’ for the American West, at a gas station in Arizona on a road trip to Canyon de Chelly, New Mexico Summer 2004.
Pistachio hot chocolate, chocolate cannoli and strawberry granita at the justly famed Pasticceria Irerra 1910, in the windy city of Messina, Sicily Spring 2022.
A break in the storm clouds illuminates an ancient stone circle in the North of England’s Peak District, February 2023. On a hike with an old friend and his Jack Russell puppy.
Hard by the ‘Green Line’, south of the pedestrian border in Nicosia, Cyprus January 2023. A heartfelt plea for re-unification which sadly is falling on deaf ears in the Turkish Cypriot North.
The sun sets on the West Bank of the Nile, Winter 2007 as the crew gets ready to moor our dahabiya for the night.
Waiting for the warmth. Boston Massachusetts, Spring 2010 on a New York and New England College tour, with our daughter.
Black rice with Langoustines, enjoyed in the open air restaurant of a traditional Sherry bodega, Sanlucar de La Barrameda, Andalucia Autumn 2022.
Ignoring the tourists in Cambodia’s second city Kampong Chan, Cambodia 2015.
Pure joy at a riverside wedding on the Mekong Delta, Vietnam as we headed North on the river to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 2015.
Royal Hawaiian hotel, Waikiki beach, Honolulu Hawaii 2013. This ‘Pink Palace of the Pacific’ is the ‘grand dame’ of Hawaii’s hotels and was the favourite haunt of Bing Crosby, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra and many others.
Remarkable wine tasting at Endemico in the fertile Valle de Guadalupe, Baja de California Mexico, January 2013. A huge surprise, to us at least!
We’ll continue to publish ‘outtakes’ like these, from time to time on Substack Notes and we’ll do another one of these compendiums in a few months time.
Catch you again in three weeks with a new story from ‘under the volcano’ in Taormina, that little slice of the Amalfi coast in Sicily (and hands down, Sabrina’s favourite spot on the island).
Marco & Sabrina
trip down memory lane!
Great photos, thanks for sharing.
Have a great trip xx
